British players spent nearly £200m on massive multiplayer online games in 2009, while the worldwide market topped £3 billion.

According to a report published today, gamers in the UK spent £195m on MMOs last year, followed by French players with £165m and German players with £145m.

However, US gamers dominated the global MMO market after spending a massive £2.55bn over the 12-month period, reports CasualGaming.biz.

The study indicated that Brits spend an average of £10.50 per month on MMOs, but only 38% of total players actually pay for sessions, with the majority opting for free games.

World Of Warcraft and Runescape were the most popular titles in the UK, followed by Club Penguin, Final Fantasy and Lord Of The Rings Online.

Spenser Chi, head of European Union operations at MMO operator Aeria Games & Entertainment, said: "With every game launch, we find a new population of users without noticeable cannibalisation of our other titles.

"This is a sign to us that the MMO market will continue to grow in number of players as well as revenue."
